We won’t bless same-sex marriage – Nigerian Catholic bishops counter Pope

1 Min Read

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has said that Catholic priests in the country will not bless same-sex unions despite the directive from the Vatican.

The bishops stated this in a Wednesday statement signed by the President of the conference, Lucius Ugorji, and the Secretary, Donatus Ogun.

The Herald had reported that the leader of the Roman Catholic Church said priests should be permitted to bless same-sex and “irregular” couples, under certain circumstances, although the Vatican maintained that blessings should not be part of regular Church rituals or related to civil unions or weddings.

However, the Nigerian bishops said the teaching of the Catholic Church on marriage remains the same.

They insisted that same-sex marriage goes against God’s law, the teachings of the church, “the laws of our nation and the cultural sensibilities of our people” and so they would not bless same-sex unions.
