Wenger: ‘My future rests on success this season’

Arsene Wenger has said his future will be determined by the success or failure of a new team built around Mesut Ozil.

Wenger’s contract expires in June and, on the day he unveiled his newest signing, the Arsenal boss said his decision to extent is 17-year tenure will be dependent on whether there is a decent return on the club’s investment.

When asked if he had opened talks over a new contract, the Frenchman said :‘We are in no hurry. We are in September and my contract finishes in June. There’s a longway to go. There’s no need to plan.

‘I’ve said many times I want to do well with this club and, in the end, I will sit down and think how well have I done with the team I have had. That has to be sufficient for me to decide yes or no.

‘One of the main judgments you can have about a manager is how well he does with his team.’

Arsenal’s club record signing Mseut Ozil believes he can end the club’s 8 year trophy drought and insists his new team can compete for the Barclay’s Premier League title this season. The German also stated that he does not consider his move to north London to be a step down.

‘I’m not disappointed. I’m at Arsenal now, which is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

‘Of course I had a very good time in Madrid. I have lots of friends there and (had) lots of very good moments. Now I’m in the strongest league in the world and have to prove myself here to continue developing here. This is why I am at the right club.’

Ozil’s father threatened legal action against Real President Florentino Perez after he questioned Ozil’s professionalism.

‘People who know me know how professional I am and I think, in the past years, you can see how many games I played — 159 games. If you’re not professional in your life then I don’t think you can play that many games.

‘All the rumours, I don’t care about them. I have a new task here. I’m just looking ahead. I am in London now. We have big goals here and we will work very hard to reach these goals.

‘I don’t want to say anything bad about Madrid because I had three wonderful years there. We achieved a lot.

‘Why did Madrid let me go? I talked about this in the past. I did not get the respect and trust, it was a bit difficult.

‘When I spoke to Arsene on the phone, he was full of respect and as a player I need that. I feel that here, that is why I came here

‘I want to look ahead. I will have wonderful years here, hopefully I will win many trophies and stay healthy and this is what I look forward to.’
