Zaria mosque collapse: Death toll rises to 10

The death toll from the collapse of a 150-year-old mosque in Zaria, Kaduna State on Friday has risen to 10.

More than 30 other worshippers have also been hospitalised for injuries sustained during the incident, it was learnt.

The historical building caved in around 4 pm as Muslim worshipers were observing their evening prayer.

The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Nuhu Bamali, who confirmed the incident, said the worshipers were in the second Sujud prayer when suddenly the affected portion of the mosque collapsed on those sitting directly at the section.

A source at the Emir’s palace said the funeral for the deceased was conducted after the isha prayers.

Meanwhile, Governor Uba Sani has commiserated with the families of the deceased while wishing the injured a quick recovery.

Governor Sani expressed shock at the incident.

In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Muhammad Shehu, the governor  thanked the Emir of Zaria for his fatherly role in rallying his subjects to carry out rescue operations and offer assistance to the injured.
