2 Min Read

Students of the University of Ibadan this morning shut down the school in protest over the school’s management victimization of a student who took part in the last protest organized by the students.

The clearly enraged students also vented their anger over persistent power failure in the school and lack of water supply.

UI management had served a one-semester rustication on a 500 Level Engineering student, Michael Tunji Epeti for partaking in a protest hundreds of students of the school staged recently to demand improvement in power supply and lack of water in the school.

The protesting students caused the closure of some roads within the institution. Lectures were disrupted as the protesters demanded Michael’s unconditional reinstatement.

The protesters called on the Students Disciplinary Committee to apologise to Michael for the psychological trauma caused to him.

In the protest tagged: “FREEMOTE”, the students resolved to lock down the campus and continue the protest daily, until their demands were met.

A former student’s union leader of the school, popularly called ‘Tcool’ said Tunji’s victimization was inappropriate, saying that if the students did not fight it out now, more students would be victimized also.

It would be recalled that University of Lagos (UNILAG) also embarked on a similar protest over the lack of light and water. It seems to be a new wave of advocacy being taken by Nigerian youths.
