“SHUT UP”!!! Nigerians respond to NY Post Editorial ‘Goodluck Nigeria’

13 Min Read

Well meaning Nigerians have rallied around President Goodluck Jonathan after an international publication, the New York Post published an editorial slamming the President‘s piece in the Washington Post. See that here.

Some Nigerians have alleged that the New York Post piece was sponsored by the All Progressives Congress, as the opposition party is said to have hired the U.S. political consultancy that helped Barack Obama win two elections to work for it leading up to the 2015 elections.

BusinessWeek had reported

AKPD Message & Media, based in Chicago and founded by David Axelrod, will help the APC with its campaign against the ruling People’s Democratic Party, which has governed Africa’s biggest oil producer since 1999, in elections set for Feb. 14.

“We have been working closely with AKPD Message and Media over the past few months, and we shall leverage on the firm’s skill, experience and expertise throughout the upcoming campaign cycle,” APC spokesman Lai Mohammed said in a statement e-mailed from Lagos today.

Some comments from Nigerians, commenting on Nairaland on the NYPost article:

Has APC infiltrated New York Post?
I’m quite disappointed with this newsbit.
If they weren’t going to input anything constructive than this blame, they had better sheathed their pens.
In the face of these threats, the last thing we will welcome is external pen pressure.
Nigerians generate enough mass ‘pressure’ as it seems.

No one is telling us how exactly they want the girls to be rescued alive, all they do is criticise.
What about their US soldiers who are here to ”give us advice”?
What useful advice have they given?

I expect some fools to dance in here and applaud the foreign article….
Jonathan should learn to ignore those people. They think they have every right to delve into the affairs of other countries. We have enough on our hands,we dn’t need their problems added to it. If they cannot make their contributions or constructive criticism, they shld kindly face the problems embattling their own country.
Everybody wants to use the Nigerian crisis to shine…lol. But some of us are too foolish to realize we are merely pawns.
Nigeria will never fail.

I HATE HYPOCRITES!!!
AMERICA LEAVE US ALONE AND MIND YOUR BUSINESS. HOW ARE WE EVEN SURE YOU GUYS ARE NOT SPONSORING BOKOHARAM?
THIS IS NIGERIA. GEJ IS A NIGERIA, HE IS LOVED BY MAJORITY OF NIGERIANS! THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS!!!

silly Americans, always shifting attention from important issues. Why won’t they talk about their president that is arming insurgents in another country to help them fight their government? Or the take over of Iraq by an Islamic sect. Aren’t American fbi/CIA in nigeria? Have they found the girls yet? Only to belittle africans and other countries that they are good at…nonsense. Leave us alone, Boko haram has international sponsors, we all know that. Even Osama bin ladden was an American CIA agent and shakau, the boko haram leader works for Osama

Who cares about their jaundiced and prejudiced views? All I know is that GEJ will lead this country till 2019. Haters can go and find solace in another country.

Nigerians and blame game…….yes he’s condemned internationally, but locally, which visible alternative(s) do we have? If the closest as rumours have it is Buhari/Tinubu, then I think we should just continue with GEJ. If APC is really serious about saving Nigeria, then they better come up with credible alternative other than those two names above. Why would I vote a man who promises terror in the land if he loses and why would I vote a man who is milking Lagosians dry while imposing his family on everyone? So let us stop throwing aspersions on the president, rather bring up credible alternatives who would do better than GEJ.

This is just my opinion, no insult intended.

talk is cheap

This is the same reason why he kept mute all along because whatever he says will be used against him by local and international media.
He didn’t talk, they say it is sign of weakness.
He talked, they say its image laundry.
However, the both talk and talklessness hasn’t brought back the missing girls. Neither has the media attacks and Counter attacks, foreign intervention, neighboring countries cooperation and the numerous protest. I thought when mc-Cain said America shouldn’t have waited to Nigerias president before they intervened, their intervention was going to perform a magic that it could not perform in Iraq and Afghanistan. But events have since shown that America and its media only bask in the euphoria of sheer arrogance. This is the most difficult time to be president of Nigeria.

I didn’t vote. I don’t vote and I won’t vote but I still contend that GEJ remains the best thing that has happened to this country. I don’t see what problems we are complaining about that are not territorial, environmental, social. Things that you simply cannot govern or legislate against. How do you stop terror or insurgency, how do you stop sectionalism and tribalism, how do you stop corruption. These are issues the people have to tackle with government but unfortunately in Nigeria people find it easier to have people do things for them than do things for themselves. This I’m afraid is an illusion. I will give just one example. The only reason the terror and insurgency will stop under any future government is if Shekau and his boys join mainstream politics and get into power or the government builds a pipeline into the insurgency and transforms it. Both ways the whole thing will look suspicious. There is something very wrong with Nigeria and I repeat again, it is not with one man. It just cannot be. Donot raise your expectations too high that a change of president will fundamentally change Nigeria. It may not.

Here in the USA in Chicago to be precise more than 10 people are killed everyday and that’s the same thing. I am only worried that this is Abuja.

Everyone seem to be critizing GEJ and fine I need to ask some questions. Have any Nigeria President done better than GEJ since democracy? If you are saying GEJ should be voted out, is it not the same selfish politicians that will get in there? GEJ may nt be the best bt better than many others. Until you show me a better person(I hope Buhari or Tinubu is not what u mean ) then GEJ have my vote. Don’t forget they promised to make the country ungovernable for him and that’s why bombings are so rampant so don’t blame him if YOU can’t do better!

This whole senario in Nigeria is pityable. I say dis because jonathan is one of the most distracted presidents ever. He’s fighting both internal and external forces which are hell bent on frustating his government. In my opinion, if this loud cry was turned to those that were making careless statements concerning nigeria if they did nt ascend the presidential seat, we would have averted this situation we find ourselves. But like most people have said, until a credible opposition comes up, I think I will stick to the lesser evil.

Can I hear someone say Goodluck America

Let us learn to APPRECIATE our country and our leaders’ efforts in the face of daunting challenges.
If we do not then we open ourselves up to ABUSE and DISRESPECT as a collective by foreigners as in this NYT rebuke that does not in anyway positively contribute to resolving the issue it claims to address.
