Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has announced that 65 cases of COVID-19 in the state are the almajiri children who were deported from Kano State.

The governor, who disclosed this on his official Twitter handle, stated that the state has a total number of 72 active cases, 65 of which are almajiris.

El-Rufai said:

“As at 6pm today, the state is treating 72 Covid-19 patients. Almajirai recently returned from Kano constitute 65 of these cases. The seven others on admission are persons with travel history outside the state or their contact.

“Since the index case was reported on 28 March 2020, Kaduna State has discharged eight patients and has recorded one fatality who died before his positive test result was received. Overall, 81 cases have been recorded in the state but the active cases are now 72.

El-Rufai further pleaded with residents of the community to report any person caught sneaking into the state as part of the efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.

“As part of efforts to prevent community transmission, the State Standing Commitee on Covid-19 appeals to citizens to report any person who they know has sneaked into the state. Such persons are violating the state’s Quarantine Orders & the FG’s prohibition of interstate travel.

“Beyond illegal conduct, such persons are risking the health and lives of Kaduna State residents by recklessly spreading the virus across state lines.”
