Aaron Ramsey must focus on the basics rather than seeking goals, says Arsene Wenger

Aaron Ramsey reminds Arsene Wenger of Frank Lampard but the Frenchman doesn’t like the comparison.

Wenger believes Ramsey’s form has suffered because he has put himself under pressure to score , after scoring 16 goals last season.

The Arsenal boss says Ramsey is now back to his best after urging him to drop deeper into midfield rather than always chasing goals.

Lampard is known for his uncanny ability to score goals, which is not too common in midfielders, and Wenger says Ramsey’s game must not all just be about scoring.

“He is a Lampard type and when you watch the picture again, who is in the box? Oh, my friend Aaron is there! But he has to start from midfield.

“I believe he felt a bit more pressure to score. You have always to come back to basics.

“What is my job? Midfielder, win the ball and give a good pass.

“He has a natural engine and a consequence of that is he will have chances, but if every time you play you think you have to score, and every time you want to be in the box, you forget a little bit about the basics of the job.

“He has a terrific engine and on the pitch he never hides.”
