The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended its ongoing strike.

The Punch reported that the decision to extend the strike was taken at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja on Monday morning.

Most chapters of the union reportedly voted in support of the strike, which was first declared on February 14, 2022, at the University of Lagos.

In July, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to resolve the crisis with ASUU within two weeks but the ultimatum failed to yield the expected results.

The National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) proposed a payment of N10,000 per session by each parent to assist the Federal Government in making more funds available for universities.

ASUU rejected the proposal.

National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the parents should instead join the body in mounting pressure on the government to accede to its requests.

On August 18, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, advised students affected by the ASUU strike to drag the union to court to demand compensation.

He stated this after he was asked if the Federal Government planned to compensate affected students.

ASUU went on a warning strike on February 14.

On March 18, it extended the strike by eight weeks, citing the government’s lack of seriousness in addressing its demands,

The strike was further extended by 12 weeks on May 9, followed by another four-week extension on August 1.
