Boko Haram: Cameroon Weighs Death Penalty for Terrorists

1 Min Read

Cameroonian lawmakers will vote in the coming days on whether to impose the death penalty on those found guilty of involvement in acts of terrorism.

Boko Haram fighters have made repeated incursions into the Far North region of the country in recent months.

Cameroonian officials fear the group is targeting young men in the impoverished north for recruitment.

According to the Speaker of the parliament, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, he said that the draft law provides the ultimate penalty, the death penalty, for anyone who commits a terrorist act. But some in the opposition see it as an attempt by the president to tighten his grip on power.

Cameroon has reinforced its military presence on its north-eastern border as part of regional efforts to combat Boko Haram, and announced earlier that it had trained a special commando unit of around 850 soldiers to fight the militants.
