Buhari’s Tenure Elongation Rejection: Oyegun Calls off Meeting with APC Reps

Following President Buhari’s rejection of the idea of elongating the tenures of party executives, leader of the APC, John Oyegun has called off a scheduled meeting with the National Working Committee of the party and the House of Representatives caucus.

The meeting which was supposed to take place yesterday, the 28th of March 2018, was cancelled.

This was even after the planned venue of the meeting – Conference Room 034, House of Representatives Wing of the National Assembly Complex – was filled with members of the APC there for the meeting including the leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila and Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

The meeting had been scheduled to deal with the ongoing crisis within the party, with Oyegun writing to stakeholders saying, “I wish to request that you arrange an early meeting between the NWC and the APC House Caucus at the National Assembly to discuss a few recent developments in the polity.”

According to Naij, a source said that after the pronouncement by the President, the meeting could no longer hold.

“The chairman’s advance party and secretariat members of staff had already arrived in the National Assembly.

“But, Odigie-Oyegun called Gbajabiamila on the telephone to say the meeting would no longer be taking place,” the source said.

Also later adding, “A message got to him (Oyegun) that some members celebrated the action of the President.

“His associates claimed that the chairman was not sure of the likely reception to receive from the lawmakers,”
