Be your own chef with this tasty Sharwama recipe

Sharwama is and has been one of the bestselling food snacks in Nigeria till date. It’s rich and creamy taste will leave you craving for more so much that many of us are guilty of emptying our pockets on this particular snack. Fortunately, a detailed recipe has been put together for the benefit of ours and our pockets.

Ingredients

  • Ground Pepper (3 tsp)
  • Sausages (as desired)
  • Mayonnaise (2 tbsp)
  • Tomato ketchup (2 tbsp)
  • Sharwama bread (as desired)
  • Chunks of chicken and beef (as desired)
  • Chopped carrot (4 carrots)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Chopped cabbage (half cut)
  • Curry (2 tsp)
  • Seasoning cubes (2 square cubes)
  • Garlic powder (1 tsp)
  • Thyme (2 tsp)
  • Ginger powder (2 tsp)

In case the sharwama bread is not readily available to you, the recipe for making it has been included. The sharwama bread can be stored for months when frozen.

Ingredients for sharwama bread

  • Flour (2 cups)
  • Vegetable oil (1/4 cup)
  • Baking powder (2 tsp)
  • Sugar (2 tsp)
  • Salt (2 tsp)
  • Yeast(optional) 2 tsp

Procedure

For sharwama bread:

  • In a bowl, add sugar to yeast.
  • Pour in some water and leave to rest for 10 mins.
  • In a different bowl, pour in the flour. Add salt, baking powder and vegetable oil.
  • Pour the yeast mixture into the bowl and mix into dough.
  • Knead dough for 5 mins.
  • Leave the dough to rest for about 10 mins.
  • Divide the dough into smaller pieces.
  • Roll out each divided dough into your desired size and thickness.
  • Place the dough on a dry pan and heat each side for 2 to 3 mins.

For sharwama:

  • Add salt, part of the ground pepper and all other spices to the beef/chicken chunks and marinate.
  • Mix remaining pepper, mayonnaise and ketchup together till it evens into a paste.
  • Add chopped carrots and cabbage to the mixture.
  • Fry sausages in relatively small amount of heated oil. Do the same for the marinated beef/chicken chunks.
  • Place the sharwama bread and start filling. Add the beef/chicken chunks, then the cabbage and carrot mixture, and lastly the sausages (1 or 2).
  • Finally, wrap and place on a dry pan then heat for 5 to 10 mins. (Heat both sides)
  • Sharwama is ready. Serve with cold drink.
