The Congolese Government on Thursday in Kinshasa announced the arrest of the second-in-command of a Rwandan rebel group operating in eastern Congo.
Information Minister, Lambert Mende, said Leopord Mujyambere from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) was arrested in the eastern city of Goma on Wednesday and taken to Kinshasa.
“The rebel leader is currently being interrogated by security forces and will face justice soon.
Mende said Mujyambere has been acting as a deputy to FDLR leader Sylvestre Mudacumura, who is wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court.
It was not known if Rwanda would seek the extradition of the second-in-command of the FDLR, a Rwandan Hutu rebel group, which is based in Congo but also stages occasional attacks in Rwanda.
Human rights groups accused the FDLR of widespread abuses against civilians in eastern Congo, where dozens of armed groups have remained active since the 1996-2003 Congo wars. (dpa/NAN)
