EFCC arrests 19 Akwa Ibom varsity students for internet fraud

Operatives of the Uyo Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 19 undergraduate students of Akwa Ibom State University, Mkpat-Enin for suspected internet-related offences.

In a statement on Saturday, the anti-graft agency said that the suspects were arrested on Friday,  April 28.

The EFCC said that they were arrested at their private hostels: Obong Abasi Lodge and Mfon Obong Lodge both located at Ikot Akpadem in Mkpat-Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

“Their arrest followed several months of surveillance on their suspected involvement in romance scam, fraudulent cryptocurrency transactions, and impersonation.

“Items recovered from them include several laptops and mobile phones.

“They will be charged to court as soon as Investigations are concluded,” the EFCC said.
