An Estate Agent Funmi Joseph of Rockdale Synergy International Ltd has commenced trial in a case where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed a two count charge of stealing and one count of issuance of a dud cheque.

EFCC states that Mrs. Joseph defrauded Dr Dennis Oyakhire of the sum of N4.8 million under false pretences of helping him to acquire a land in Redeemed Camp at Mowe.

Oyakhire, a staff of Shell Petroleum Development Company told the court that he saw the advert for the land in Castles magazine.

He was led in evidency by EFCC counsel Ben Obi.

He stated, “I met with her through the number placed on the advert and indicated interest in securing a three-bedroom flat under construction in the area.

“We agreed that a deposit of N2 million should be paid and I sent the money through my cousin who is also a pastor in Redeemed Church.”

“After paying the initial deposit and an additional N2.8 million, Joseph started giving frivolous excuses. I therefore, requested for a refund of my money because at this stage, I knew that the whole process was a scam.

He further testified that the agent later gave him a cheque for N2 million which was dishonoured by the bank. It was at this point, the victim said he alerted the EFCC.

The matter was adjourned by the court until June 10.
