Sports fans on Sunday commended Nigeria’s U-23 male football team, DreamTeam VI, for their heroics in beating Denmark 2-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Rio Olympics football event.

The fans told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that in spite of the team’s challenges, they had continued to perform credibly well.

Femi Adefeso, a sports journalist, said that they showed their patriotism.

“It’s a brilliant performance from them; they showed their love for their fatherland.

“The next step is to scale through the German hurdle and hopefully win gold in the final,’’ Adefeso said.

An ex-international, Bright Omokharo, said the Dream Team were fantastic and should be given the credit of doing the nation proud.

“They are indeed thorough professionals in the game as they step on the field to deliver the stuff they are very good at.

“They have not allowed their financial situation to becloud their performance on the field; indeed they deserve a lot of credit.

“We wish them greatest luck as they engage Germany,’’ Omokharo told NAN.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s D’Tigers beat Croatia 90-77 to record their first win in the basketball event of the Olympics.

The Nigerian team led in all quarters of the match and never allowed the Europeans the chance to play their kind of game.

Nigeria having lost three games prior to the victory over Croatia will need to beat Brazil, in their last group match for a chance to qualify to the quarter-finals of the event.
