Federal Government, ASUU Fail to Reach Agreement as Strike Continues

The Nigerian Government has once more failed to reach an agreement with striking University lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) following a meeting between both parties on Monday, November 26, 2018.

The meeting which was presided over by the Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu was held behind closed doors to find a solution to the ongoing indefinite strike by the lecturers at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja ending without a resolution.

At the end of the meeting which lasted for ever three hours, the National President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, briefed reporters saying the meeting had been adjourned for another date after fruitless deliberations.

Reacting to the ongoing strike however, the Nigerian parliament expressed its worries about the strike which has resulted in the grounding of academic activities in most public universities across the country.

Parliament’s position was made known when the Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education, Mr. Aminu Suleiman led members of the committee on an oversight visit to the Ministry of Education.

The committee chairman appealed to the executive arm of government as well as members of ASUU to go beyond resolving the current industrial action and provide lasting solutions that would make strike in the education sector a thing of the past.

The government, in a statement from the ministry, also said it was committed to ending strikes in the sector despite the challenges of funding.

ASUU had embarked on a total and indefinite industrial action on November 4 following a meeting of its national leadership at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, the Ondo State capital with its leadership saying it took the decision due to poor funding of public universities across the country.
