Heartburn is one common symptom that a lot of people experience after consuming particular foods and it is majorly as a result of acid reflux. Acid reflux happens when there is a return flow of acid from the stomach back into the esophagus.

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) works to prevent food in stomach from moving up into esophagus by closing up. But when the LES becomes weak/damaged, it cannot function as well it should, resulting into an acid reflux.

The foods we eat affect how much acid our stomach produces. This is why it is important to take note of the foods that cause the heartburn symptom in our bodies and the ones that do not.

  • Ginger

Ginger contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties and this is a perfect remedy for heartburn and several other gastrointestinal issues. Include ginger in your cooking recipe and see the difference.

  • Healthy fats

Instead of saturated and trans fats, take healthy unsaturated fatty foods. You can get healthy fats from foods like walnuts, avocados, olive oil etc.

  • Oats

Oatmeal is made from whole grains and is commonly eaten as a breakfast meal. Oats contain high amounts of fiber and fiber is known to lower the risk of developing an acid reflux.

  • Vegetables

Eat vegetables like green beans, cucumbers, potatoes, leafy green veggies, broccoli, etc. They contain low amounts of fat and sugar, hence a reduced risk of heartburn.

  • Noncitric fruits

Citrus fruits are more acidic than others and they could really trigger heartburn in people. Try taking fruits like pears, apples, bananas, pawpaw, etc instead.

Although these foods contain brilliant nutrients that could lessen heartburn symptoms, if you’ve experienced a reflux or any other gastrointestinal issue from eating them, you should not indulge in them.
