Leading specialist games retailer GameStop claims it’s seeing “strong demand” for PlayStation 4.

Company president Tony Bartel said 600,000 members of GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards loyalty program have signed up for the PS4 ‘First to Know List’, which offers notifications of any news or purchase options on Sony’s upcoming console.

GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards program is believed to have around 21 million members, who are deemed to be the retailer’s most active customers.

“With only a glance at the PS4, gamers are excited and eager to know more,” said Bartel. “Within just a few weeks, more than 600,000 people have signed up, showing strong demand for this new console.”

GameStop didn’t offer any solid PS4 pre-order data.

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton also said: “Our goal with PlayStation 4 is to deliver inspiring and creative play experiences that gamers have never seen before.

“The level of enthusiasm we’re seeing from GameStop customers demonstrates how the promise of PS4 is resonating with gamers, and we’re looking forward to unveiling more about the new platform in the coming months.”

Sony revealed the PS4 last month and confirmed a PS4 release date of “holiday 2013” in at least one of Japan, Europe and the US.

A YouTube advert linking to Sony’s PlayStation 4 reveal event was recently named as the most watched commercial on the video website for February. The PS4 ‘Be the First to Know’ advert, arranged by agency Deutsch Inc, was clicked on about 26.3 million times, nearly double that of the most popular Super Bowl spot.
