Following Seun Kuti’s arrest and detention for assaulting a policeman, the Afrobeats singer’s manager, Ayo Moses, has said that his client was drunk at the time of the incident.

A video of the incident that occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos circulated on social media on Saturday.

In the video, Seun Kuti can be seen yelling at the uniformed policeman before proceeding to slap him in the face.

He explained in a social media post later on Saturday that the policeman put his family’s life in danger but did not state how.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba subsequently ordered the singer’s arrest and investigation.

Seun Kuti presented himself to the police in Lagos on Monday morning and was immediately placed under arrest and detention.

Speaking on the incident, Ayo Moses said, “On the said day, Seun was driving with his family on the third mainland bridge, when he was suddenly hit from behind, by a police truck being driven by an officer who was reportedly drunk.

“This act from the officer led Seun’s daughter into a sudden shock, as she was visibly shaken by the hit.

“So, this made Seun pursue the truck, double-crossed it and forced it to a stop. When the police officer got down from the truck, instead of apologizing, he was arguing with Seun, which provoked him to slap the officer.”

Moses further explained that Seun Kuti did what he did because the policeman jeopardised his family’s safety, noting that anyone could have reacted in similar fashion given the same situation.

“People should realise that men on uniforms also provoke civilians. Immunity is no excuse for impunity,” he said.

He further disclosed that human rights lawyer, Femi Falana SAN will defend Seun Kuti in court.
