100 people who had contact with Italian coronavirus patient identified – Lagos, Ogun govts

As a precautionary measure, the governments of Lagos and Ogun states have identified at least 100 persons who had contact with the 44-year-old Italian man that brought coronavirus into Nigeria.

The contacts are being monitored to prevent the spread of the virus, The Herald gathered.

Recall that the index patient was said to have flown aboard a Turkish Airlines flight into Nigeria via the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos on Monday night.

He had flown in from Milan, Italy, having transited through Istanbul, Turkey.

The index patient, whose name has not been revealed by authorities, thereafter lodged at a hotel around the airport area before embarking on a visit to Lafarge Cement Factory in Ewekoro, Ogun State on Tuesday morning.

After he showed signs of illness, he was reportedly taken to a clinic. After testing positive for coronavirus virus, he was taken to the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, where he has remained since Thursday.

Speaking on Saturday, the Commissioner for Health in Lagos, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed that the patient’s condition has improved.

“By Saturday, his symptoms had subsided. He hasn’t developed any respiratory symptoms and we are quite happy about that because if he has respiratory symptoms like coughing and sneezing, which makes the disease more contagious,” the commissioner stated.

Abayomi, who spoke at the Emergency Operation Centre at the Mainland Hospital in Yaba, where the patient was being quarantined, added that the Lagos and Ogun state governments were jointly monitoring the 100 persons that the Italian had contact with during his brief stay in the country.
