A former senator for Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani, says military rule should be discouraged in Africa, noting that democracy remains the best form of government.

Sani, who was imprisoned by the military government of Sani Abacha in the ’90s, said this in a tweet on Thursday.

The activist-cum-politician spoke a day after the military took over power in neighbouring Niger Republic.

The coup d’etat has been condemned by the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS).

Sani said he was surprised that some young people on social media have been expressing support for the illegal take-over of government in Niger.

According to him, military rule must be “totally rejected and resisted” on the African continent and in West Africa.

“Military rule must be totally rejected and resisted in West Africa.

“Our democracy is not perfect and there is no perfect democracy anywhere. Military rule is not the solution.

“I’m surprised to read comments in the social media; it appears that many young people are now in support of it.

“I understand the disappointment and the frustration with the political class.

“It’s still better we continue to struggle to make our democracy better until we get it right,” Sani said.
