Northern govs hail ex-Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar at 79

The Northern Governors’ Forum has congratulated the former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, on his 79th birthday.

The Chairman of the forum and governor of Plateau, Mr. Simon Lalong felicitated the former military leader, in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs Dr. Makut Macham, on Monday in Jos.

He described him as a patriotic Nigerian, who has been consistent in working for the unity, peace, and progress of the country.

He noted that in addition of serving the nation meritoriously during his military career, he was instrumental in the transition to Nigeria’s democracy, by handing over power to an elected President and ending the long years of military rule.

He said the gesture has engraved the celebrant’s name in the annals of history, for his significant role in Nigeria’s democracy.

He thanked him for always offering his counsel to the government at all levels, in addressing the security challenges in the country, adding that his interventions and advocacy have further strengthened the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

The chairman said the Northern Governors Forum would continue to leverage his advice, leadership qualities, and maturity in addressing the challenges facing the region.

Lalong urged the celebrant not to relent in his contributions of ensuring the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria, devoid of violence, acrimony and desperation.

He wished him more years of God’s protection, good health and more wisdom.

News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), reports that the Nigerian Military leader, who served as the head of state from 1998 to 1999, was born on June 13 in Minna, Niger State.(NAN)
