Power Outages Hit Abuja, Kogi As Electricity Company Faces Technical Glitches

2 Min Read

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and some areas in Kogi State are currently facing power outages due to technical glitches, affecting the service coverage of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

On Tuesday, the AEDC informed its customers in Zamani Estate, Abacha Road Mararaba, Ruga Juli, Old Karu Road, Glory Estate, and environs in Abuja about a technical fault on the 33kV feeder k6 from the AT9 Karu Transmission Station managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

In a statement, the Disco expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured customers that the TCN maintenance crew was working to restore electricity supply to the affected areas soon.

Simultaneously, the TCN announced planned maintenance on its TR3 45MVA and TR2 60MVA power transformers at its 132/33kV Okene Transmission Substation from Tuesday to Wednesday, between 10 am and 3 pm each day.

As a result, AEDC will be unable to supply power to customers in Okene, Kabba, Ososo, and Ikare during this period.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah also disclosed the commissioning of a 100MVA 132/33kV power transformer at its Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation, aimed at increasing the substation’s bulk transmission capability by 80 MW.

This initiative, in collaboration with the World Bank, includes the rehabilitation and expansion of the transmission substation, as well as the addition of three feeders and associated accessories.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, recently summoned the management of AEDC and TCN over the worsening power supply situation in their franchise areas.

Despite the summons, both Discos and TCN have attributed the low power supply to challenges such as gas shortages, vandalism, energy theft, and other factors.
