Mr Abiodun Tobun, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure on Sunday, urged residents of the state to protect government facilities as they would protect their personal property.

Tobun (APC-Epe I) told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that most people did not see anything that belonged to government as theirs.

According to him, wasting and destroying government property installed with tax payers’ money is like people hurting and harming themselves.

He said: “My advice to the people of Lagos state is that, they should know that government’s property is people’s property and that the property belong to the people.

“If the government inaugurates any project, the project becomes that of the people, because the people are the end users of the project.
“So, it is our duty to protect government property.

“Roads are constructed for the use of the people, if we allow the roads to go bad, it means we would be driving on bad roads.

“It is our duty to ensure that the property of the government is well protected.

“If we use it very well, it is to our own advantage or else, we will be coming back to repair it, when we should have gone to other places.

He expressed concern over the destruction of streets lights, road, water facilities, and electric cables, among others by some people.

The lawmaker, who noted that the state government could not be everywhere, urged the people to stop destroying government property.

“Let us minimise the damage to our roads and destruction to government property.
“We need not to be monitored, tele-guided or told what we need to do.

“An average individual should know what is good and what is bad. It is wrong to dig potholes or situate mechanic workshop on the road or cut the road.” (NAN)
