Senator-elect for Niger East Senatorial District, Barrister David Umaru, on Tuesday said he will not collect allowances when he assumes work at the National Assembly.

It will be recalled that he defeated the governor of Niger state, Dr Babaginda Aliyu at the just concluded senatorial elections.

While addressing a press conference at his Minna residence, Umaru said there is the need to reduce the sufferings of the poor masses, adding that he is going to serve, better the lots of the people that have been neglected for years.

According to Umaru: “I am going to the Senate to work and not to collect allowances. “The lives of my people must be improved upon so that they can have a sense of belonging. “My going to the Senate is not to amass wealth but to work for the progress of my people who for many years have been neglected.”

Umaru of the All Progressives Congress, who promised to work for the good of his senatorial zone and improve their well-being, added: “The stolen mandate of the electorate of Niger East Senatorial District of Niger State is back to where it is supposed to be.

“And most importantly, the renewal of the mandate through the just concluded March 28, 2015 National Assembly elections.” He however described his success as a ‘political tsunami’ which swept away the PDP and its candidate, Governor Aliyu. Accordingly, Umaru said: “Aliyu had wanted to use the opportunity to continue to steal the people’s mandate.

“I have on several occasions advised him to stop toying with the collective will and interest of our people but he would not heed. “Instead, he has continued to trample on their collective dreams and aspirations.”

The senator-elect bemoaned Aliyu’s alleged reckless and financial mismanagement in the past eight years, which he said has thrown the people into abject poverty and unbearable hardship. He commended members of the APC for their absolute support during the elections and promised that he will not let them down.

“I will do my best in influencing federal presence in terms of developmental projects to Niger State,” he said.
