Why Boko Haram Released 21 Chibok Girls

1 Min Read

The Nigerian presidency has confirmed the release of 21 of the abducted Chibok girls.

Recall that the girls abducted in 2014 from their schools by Islamist-Jihadist sect, Boko Haram, have been a source of several protests especially by the Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG, campaigners led by Dr. Oby Ezekwesili.

The release of 21 of the Chibok girls is however not unconnected to the exchange broker between the terrorists and the Federal Government as it has been confirmed that the girls were released in exchange for four Boko Haram prisoners.

The presidency in its statement said: “The release of the girls…is the outcome of negotiations between the administration and the Boko Haram brokered by the International Red Cross and the Swiss government.”

It further added: “The negotiations will continue.”
