The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega has declared that he has finished serving as electoral umpire while declaring that he would not in any way accept renewal of his appointment as Chairman of INEC, or any government appointment when his tenure expires.

The INEC boss made the declaration yesterday on the Hausa Service of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) while being interviewed on whether or not will agree to remain in his office after June.

Jega who said that the opportunity given to him to serve for five years in office is ok for him, noting that he has made his contribution for the success of the country and that somebody else should be given the opportunity to have a shot.

He said, “I have served as INEC chairman for five year and it is ok for me. I have given my contribution for success of the country . If am given any appointment, I will completely reject it. At least some body should be given a chance.”

On why he was calm when he was confronted by the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe during the collation of Presidential result on Tuesday, Jega responded that, ” I was calm because I knew that the allegations were not true and that was why I did not talk. I am not afraid of him or anything. Deep inside me I know that I am sincere about what I am doing.”
