The senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district, Sen. Shehu Sani, has urged the leadership of the National Assembly not to use force to clear protesting workers at the assembly complex.

Activities at the complex were paralysed as the staff under the aegis of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) on Monday made good their threat to embark on a four-day strike.

The workers who are demanding mainly for the payment of arrears of 28% increase in their salaries since 2010, stormed the National Assembly in the early hours of Monday, blocking all the entrances into the complex.

The protesting workers also cut off essential services like power and water supply, thereby totally crippling any form of activity within the premises.

Taking to his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday morning, Sani urged the leadership to dialogue with the workers, describing the workers’ demands as legitimate.

He said, “Force must not be used to ‘clear’ the protesting workers at the National Assembly. The dialogue process should continue in order to resolve the impasse. Their demands are legitimate. As democrats, we must always continue to set an example for civility.”
