Sirleaf, who is also the Chair, Authority of Heads of State and Government, said this while addressing newsmen during her two-day official visit to the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja on Sunday.

“This is good news for The Gambia, good news for ECOWAS, for Africa, for the rest of the world.

“Once again, democracy has prevailed; we applaud it, endorse it and we just hope that The Gambia can continue along their development path.’’

She added that the Authority of Heads of State had congratulated both candidates and The Gambian people on successful completion of the election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Presidential elections were held in the Gambia on Dec. 1.

In a surprise result, opposition candidate Adama Barrow defeated long-term incumbent Yahya Jammeh who had ruled for 22 years.
