Renowned Nigerian singer, Teniola Apata, professionally known as Teni, has revealed an unconventional source for her Yoruba language proficiency—YouTube. Despite hailing from Yoruba heritage, the 31-year-old artist shared that she honed her Yoruba-speaking skills by immersing herself in Yoruba movies on the popular video-sharing platform while residing in America.
In a recent episode of the Zero Conditions podcast, Teni shed light on her language-learning experience, stating, “Do you know how I learnt to speak Yoruba? It was when I went to America. I learnt it from YouTube. I was watching Yoruba films like mad.”
Teni’s revelation adds an interesting dimension to the ways individuals leverage online resources to connect with their cultural roots, even when physically distant.
During the podcast, the talented singer also delved into her lifestyle choices, disclosing that she initiated her journey into alcohol consumption in 2021. Prior to that year, Teni abstained from both alcohol and smoking. She clarified that her decision to start drinking alcohol was purely “for fun,“
