Mexican Female Mayor Shot Dead One Day After Being Sworn Into Office

A woman elected as a Mayor in the Mexican municipality of Temixco has been shot dead by gunmen inside her home on Saturday, one day after coming into office.

According to CNN, the lady, Gisela Mota Ocampo, was elected to led the city which has a population of nearly 100,000 people, which lies 60 miles of the country’s capital of Mexico City.

She was shot dead by armed men believed to have drug-related interests, in the presence of her family, a Morelos state security commissioner, Alberto Capella, said.

The gunmen were reportedly given chase by security agents and two of them were shot dead.

The slain mayor was described as “an honest and committed public servant” in a statement released by the Morelos state government.

In a related development, the Morelos attorney general, Javier Perez Duron, said two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident and will be prosecuted.
