Renowned gospel minister Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action against individuals he accuses of engaging in criminal defamation and cyberstalking. The singer, through his legal representatives – Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Benga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia – submitted a formal petition to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on April 1, 2024, urging for an investigation and prosecution of the alleged perpetrators.
The petition follows a series of defamatory accusations leveled against Bassey by four social media users, which circulated widely on various online platforms. The unfounded claims, alleging Bassey’s involvement in paternity issues with another popular gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo, sparked uproar and garnered significant attention on social media.
In the petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Bassey’s legal team highlights the damaging impact of the false allegations on their client’s reputation and professional standing. They emphasize Bassey’s contributions as a gospel music minister whose work has positively impacted countless individuals worldwide.
“Our client is a gospel music minister whose songs and ministrations have impacted the lives of so many from different walks of life across the globe,” reads an excerpt from the petition.
The legal representatives call for swift and decisive action by law enforcement authorities to address the matter and hold the accused individuals accountable for their actions. The four social media users identified in the petition – Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid – are urged to face the legal consequences of their alleged defamation and cyberstalking.
