Two migrants have died in Austria while hiding in a goods train, police said on Saturday.

The man and woman were run over at the station in Woergl when the train began to move, while the third man was seriously injured.

Police in the state of Tyrol said their initial assessment suggested the victims were already frozen.

“The trains start their engines together and move off 10 minutes later. You have to wake up,’’ a police spokesman said.

However, the exact cause of death would be determined by an autopsy.

The origin and age of the migrants, who police say were probably on their way to Germany, is unknown.

The train started its journey in the Italian city of Verona and passed through the Brenner Pass in the Alps where temperatures would have been well below freezing during the night of Saturday.

Austria holds a re-run of its presidential election on Sunday where far-right candidate Norbert Hofer, who has been campaigning on an anti-immigration ticket, takes on Green rival Alexander Van der Bellen. (dpa/NAN)
