101 Prison Inmates Granted Amnesty In Kwara State Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

The Kwara State government has granted 101 prison inmates freedom due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Governor Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazak ordered the release of 101 inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kwara state to decongest the Correctional facilities across the state in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The Controller of Corrections in the state, Mr. Adebisi Adewale Francis, noted that the inmates who were granted amnesty are those who have less than three years to serve and are of good conduct, those who have served 75% of there sentences, low risk offenders and those are sick.

Francis commended the governor for extending palliative materials to the freed inmates to aid their reintegration into the society.

Below is the breakdown of the criteria for which inmates were granted amnesty:

A. 83 Inmate are released outrightly
B. i. 31 Inmate released from the old Ilorin custodial centre okekura
ii. 51 Inmate were released from the New Ilorin custodial center mandala
iii. 1 inmate was realesed from the lafiagi custodial farm centre

C. 2 Inmate sentenced to 10 years imprisonment was reduced to 8 years.

D. 16 Condemned Inmates was committed to life Imprisonment.

The inmates were released to their family members and advised to show gratitude by becoming good and productive citizens of the state.
