President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the decision by the government of United States to send 300 military personnel to assist in the fight against Boko Haram.

It will be recalled that some US officials revealed on Wednesday that US President, Barack Obama ordered to send troops to Cameroon to assist the country combat the Boko Haram insurgency, a menace which affects Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

President Buhari, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, on Thursday in a chat with AFP described the move as “a welcome development”.

“The United States has given the pledge to support the fight against Boko Haram in Nigeria and in the region,” Shehu said. “This is the fulfilment of that pledge and we are very happy about it. The United States’ move is quite commendable.”

Similarly, Military spokesperson, Colonel Rabe Abubakar lauded the move, stating that it would go a long way in accelerating the end of Boko Haram.

“This is how the fight can be done collectively with partners cooperating with us to fight against a common cause — terrorism — which has been ravaging the region for some time now.

“We appeal to other nations to emulate the good example of the United States. The United States has experience in fighting terrorism.

“Fighting terrorism is not one nation’s issue. It requires a global effort. We all need to work together… to fight this evil,” Abubakar told AFP.
