The Nigerian Army and Police have reportedly killed over fifty Boko Haram fighters after the insurgents stormed a military base in Damboa, Borno in a reprisal attack.

The attack was meant to be retaliatory for the successful operation carried out by the Air Force and Army on Thursday to clamp down on Boko Haram enclaves at Yajiwa and Alagarno.

“It was a successful air raid carried out by the Air Force in conjunction with the ground troops of the Nigeria army from Division 7. During the air raid that took place on Thursday evening, the Boko Haram suffered heavy casualties as dozens of them were killed. Angered by the devastation they suffered, the insurgents decided to mobilise in full force with an attempt to attack the base in Damboa, but unknown to them, the soldiers there were fully alert about possible reprisal attack. And when they eventually surfaced on Friday evening in over ten vehicles, soldiers engaged them in a fierce shoot-out that claimed over 50 of them,” a source told SUN.

To revenge the raid, Boko Haram men stormed the military base in Damboa, firing Rocket Propelled Grenades and setting off Improvised Explosive Devices, however the Nigerian Army were expecting a reprisal attack and fought off the insurgents, killing about 50 of them, but not without casualties on their side as well.

A total of 5 soldiers and a senior officer were killed in the attack, according to Defence HQ spokesman, Major Gen Chris Olukolade.
