Following the disappearance of a businesswoman who had complained of the current economic conditions in the country and its effect on her business as she had described her debt profile before her disappearance as ‘beyond redemption’, another major tragedy has been recorded.

The incident occurred in Lagos yesterday when a man jumped into the Mile Two River in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of the state.

According to eyewitnesses, the man before he made the jump was reported to have stood on the bridge for some minutes as he repeatedly expressed his suffering and bitterness as regards the harsh nature of the economy.

Eyewitnesses reported that the unidentified man mentioned Buhari’s name repeatedly before he made his decision to jump into the river.

Daily Sun reported that the man was however saved from drowning by the timely intervention of a passing speedboat whose passengers saved the man who was already gasping for breath.

Speaking on the incident, a witness, Mr. Andy Odiaka, said: “I was there on the bridge where the man was also standing. He was speaking to himself. He said he had no transport fare to move from one place to another.

“He said his suffering was too much that he could hardly feed. I also heard him saying life was meaningless to him. He mentioned Buhari many times, and the next thing I saw, the man jumped from the bridge into the water.

Odiaka further added: “He is an Igbo man because he was speaking the language. I thought he was joking when he said he was tired of everything around him.

“If not for a speedboat that was passing, he would have died. The boat stopped and the passengers dragged him to the riverbank and they continued their journey.

“Thereafter, nobody was ready to assist him. People simply looked at him, expressed sympathy and continued their journey. I have to call an emergency number.”

Another witness who gave his name as Okpala said: “The man said he was tired of life and he wanted to kill himself.”

It was gathered that passersby had contributed the sum of N1,000 in order to take the man to a medical facility prior to the arrival of the ambulance.
