The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Monday provided the sum of $1.4 million to feed and support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.
In a similar stem, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), also provided food items, building materials and cash to IDPs in Maiduguri, Borno state.
A statement by NEMA’s spokesperson, Sani Datti said ECOWAS President, H.E. Marcel de Souza met with Borno State governor Kashim Shetima to present the separate Cheque of $1 million and $0.4million for food from ECOWAS reserves.
Souza said they were in Borno to support IDPs and refugees in Nigeria.
The ECOWAS President pledged to do everything possible to support the displaced persons in the region.
The statement also added that Director General of NEMA Muhammad Sani Sidi, also met with Shettima to hand over foods and building materials in support of the ongoing effort of reconstructing houses in Bama, Hawul and Ganborin Gala communities destroyed by insurgency in the state.
The items provided by NEMA includes: 2600 bundles of Roofing sheet, 2500 piece ceiling boards, 350 bags of 3″nails, 350 packets of zinc nails 3600 bag of rice, 1400 bags of bean and1000 bags of millet.
Receiving the items, Borno State Governor, appreciated NEMA for its continued support to the IDPs and ECOWAS for the donations and assured that the items will be used for the purpose for which they were donated.
