The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senate are currently facing a heavy backlash on social media following a gaffe made by Akpabio.
A video that went viral showed the Senate President announcing to his colleagues at a plenary session that “to enable us enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly”.
After a verbal reprimand from his colleagues, and in an apparent move to avert public outcry, Akpabio withdraw his statement, saying he had sent prayers instead.
“I withdraw that statement. To allow you to enjoy your holiday, the Senate President has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return,” Akpabio said.
However, the change of tone did little to assuage the masses, many of whom took to Twitter to vent their annoyance.

@JaypeeGeneral wrote, “He didn’t realize he was still on a live TV, they are suffocating the poor with suffering and enjoying themselves. They don’t care about you and I. SAD!”
