The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has ordered its members driving petroleum tankers in Lagos State to suspend their services, beginning on Monday, August 10.
The National leadership of NUPENG gave the directive on Friday following the failure of the Lagos state government to address major grievances by members of the union in the State.

The association issued a statement signed by its national president, Williams Akporeha as well as its secretary, Olawale Afolabi ordering its members in Lagos to withdraw their services from Monday, August 10, 2020.
Excerpts from the statement read;
“The entire rank and file members of the union are deeply pained, frustrated and agonised by the barrage of these challenges being consistently faced by petroleum tanker drivers in Lagos State and are left with no other option but to direct the withdrawal of their services in Lagos State until the Lagos State Government and other relevant stakeholders address these critical challenges.
It is sad and disheartening to note here that we had made several appeals and reports to the Lagos State Government and the Presidential Task Force for the decongestion of Apapa on these challenges but all to no avail.”
The petroleum workers union said it made wide consultations with key stakeholders in the oil and gas industry as well as within the union before the decision to down tools was reached.
NUPENG said further that the strike action will commence from 12am, August 10, if the Lagos state government refuses to address its concerns and grievances.
