Turkish death penalty will breach international law – UN

UN Human Rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has warned Turkey will be in violation of international law if it was to reintroduce capital punishment.

The UN Human Rights Office pointed out that Turkey has signed on to an international agreement that aims to abolish the death penalty and that international law do not permit withdrawing from such pacts.

“I urge the Turkish government to refrain from turning back the clock on human rights protections,’’ Zeid said.

Zeid said that mass suspension of judicial officials since the failed coup “is cause for serious alarm’’ about the independence of Turkey’s justice system.
