Wizkid expresses hurt over the death of his mother at wake-keep ceremony

Afrobeats sensation, Ayo Balogun, known globally as Wizkid, opened up about the profound pain he experiences over the loss of his mother, describing it as the deepest he has ever felt. The emotional statement was made during the wake-keep ceremony in honor of his late mother, Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun, held on Thursday.

Wizkid’s mother passed away on August 18, 2023, in London, leaving the star heartbroken and navigating through a challenging period of mourning. The artist had kept a low profile, staying away from public appearances during this difficult time.

During the candlelight procession, a prelude to the wake-keep, Wizkid made his first public appearance in almost a month. The event was a poignant moment as the star paid tribute to his mother, reminiscing about the crucial role she played in his life and musical journey.

Wizkid’s childhood was shaped within a polygamous home in Surulere, Lagos, with a Muslim father and a Christian mother. Despite their differences, his mother stood as a formidable pillar of strength, offering unwavering support to her son’s rapid rise in the music industry.

In 2014, Wizkid released the song ‘Mummy Mi’ as part of his ‘Ayo’ album, a heartfelt dedication to mothers worldwide. Through his music and public statements, he consistently praised his mother, expressing gratitude for the joy she brought into his life.
