Afenifere, Ohaneze Endorse Jonathan Re-election Bid, Cite Nigerian Unity

Afenifere and Ohaneze Ndigbo, both Yoruba and Igbo socio-cultural groups have endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid.

The groups cited the need for the implementation of the national conference report as the reason for the endorsement.

Afenifere gave its endorsement at a meeting of its members with the President at the residence of Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasanranti in Akure on Tuesday.

Spokesman of the group, Yinka Odumakin after the meeting said “Afenifere supports the President’s re-election because he had the courage to convoke the national conference and we hope that he will implement the report.

“The President expressed the commitment that he will adopt the report within 12 months of returning to office.”

In a communiqué signed by the seven presidents-general of the Ohaneze Ndigbo namely Chris Elumunoh of Anambra, Dr Eric Ebeh of Enugu, Dr Ezechi Chukwu of Imo , Chief Emmanuel Oparanta of Abia, Pius Nwankwo of Ebonyi, Prince Igo Okparamma of Rivers and Ifeanyichukwu Onwukamike of Delta, the group also cited the need for the implementation of the national conference.

The group said “considering the realities of the forthcoming 2015 general elections, Ohanaeze Ndigbo State Presidents forum, has objectively made a critical assessment of the scenario and our findings revealed that the implementation of the just concluded National Conference resolutions is both timely and necessary for the sake of equity, fairness and common good of all Nigerians as an entity.

“In view of the forgoing, the Ohanaeze state presidents forum therefore endorses President Jonathan in the forthcoming presidential election and urges all Ndigbo in the 36 states of the federation and Abuja to vote massively for him.”
