Lucas Diamond Corp. has unearthed a 1,111 carat diamond, the largest diamond discovey in over a century.
The Type-Ila diamond which is slightly smaller than a tennis ball, is second in size only to the Cullinan diamond that was cut into the British Crown Jewels.
The diamond was recovered in the south love of Karowe mine in central Botswana by machines. The Karowe mine in Botswana is a source of some of the world’s largest and best stones.
A London based analyst at BMO Capital Markets, Edward Sterck, said, “it is almost impossible to estimate a value for such an extraordinary stone given that a valuation is highly dependent on the color, clarity and cutting and polishing characteristics”.
The largest diamond ever discovered is the Cullinan, a 3,106 carat stone found in 1905 in South Africa.
